ஏதேனும் ஒன்றை செய்யவல்ல திறமையே ஒன்றின் மதிப்பு என நான் எண்ணுகிறேன். இறுதி வெளியீட்டை நன்மையாகவோ தீமையாகவோ பயன்படுத்தும் விதத்தைக் காட்டிலும், அதனை உருவாக்கும் திறமையையே நான் ஒன்றின் சக்தி அல்லது திறமை என்கிறேன்.

அதைப் போலவே அறிவியலும். சொர்கத்தின் கதவைத் திறக்கும் அதே வழியில், இருக்கும் நரகத்தையும் அறிவியலால் திறக்க முடியும். மேலும் நமக்கு எந்தக் கதவு சொர்கத்தினுடையது அல்லது நரகத்தினுடயது என்பதை நமக்கு அறிவிக்கப்பட்டு இருக்காது. ஒருவேளை அந்தச் சாவியை தூக்கி எரிந்து விட்டால் நாம் சொர்கத்தினுள் நுழைய முடியாது. அல்லது நாம் எவ்வாறு சிறந்த வழிகளில் அந்த சாவியை உபயோகிப்பது என்பதை கண்டறிவதில் பிரச்சனைகள் ஏற்படலாம். உண்மையில் இது ஒரு குறிப்பிடத்தக்க கேள்வி ஆகும், ஆனால் நம்மால் சொர்கத்தின் கதவைத் திறக்கக் கூடிய சாவியின் மதிப்பை முற்றிலும் மறுக்க முடியாது.
